Within an hour or two I had sixteen headings on my wall. These were sixteen mini projects that were all in my control to implement and manage that would have some impact on the poor delivery performance and customer satisfaction. Not every problem in the business would be fixed, I realised this, but I would be able to exert my maximal level of influence in the business.

As I stood staring at my handywork I realised that there was a clear priority in the plans. I marked this up and then made a commitment to myself, to start my working day working on my plans in the sequence I had agreed with myself. When I completed an action plan, I checked the sequence again to ensure that it made sense and then I carried on. Some days I got a lot of work done and some days I got very little done, but I accomplished something towards my plans. I still had the day job to contend with but starting the day with my plans made a real difference. Starting the day was under my control, how I finished it didn’t always seem to be!
